How to Make Lobak Soup (Traditional & Healthy Version)
Lobak Soup is a cherished Malaysian dish that highlights the humble daikon radish, known locally as lobak putih. This light, clear soup is a staple in many Malaysian households, especially among the Chinese and Peranakan communities. Its clean, soothing flavors come from simmering lobak with a medley of local ingredients like carrot, celery, and aromatic herbs such as daun sup (Malaysian celery leaves) and daun bawang (spring onions). The soup showcases the Malaysian tradition of letting fresh, local produce shine, resulting in a comforting bowl that’s both warming and nutritious. Perfect for lunch, especially on rainy days or after a festive meal, Lobak Soup is often served as part of a larger meal but can easily be enjoyed on its own for a lighter, health-conscious option. The clear broth is naturally low in calories and fat, making it a popular choice for those seeking wholesome, vegetarian meals in Malaysia. With its subtle sweetness from carrots and umami notes from dried shiitake mushrooms, this soup is a beautiful representation of Malaysia’s multicultural cuisine, bringing together Chinese culinary influences with locally sourced ingredients for a truly Malaysian flavor experience.
